The Lap-Band System

Transform Your Body with the Lap-Band

If you are committed to transforming your body and your life, you could be among the hundreds of thousands of people who have successfully lost weight with the Lap-Band® System. This FDA-approved bariatric surgery option at our Birmingham, Alabama outpatient surgery center reduces the capacity of the stomach to make you feel full faster and stay full longer. The Lap-Band gastric banding system is adjustable, reversible and does not require invasive surgery.

The Lap-Band at Hedden Plastic Surgery is a quick and easy procedure that usually takes less than an hour. Since the procedure is minimally-invasive, you can recover and get back to your life in about a week.

During the Lap-Band procedure, Dr. William Hedden places the soft and durable gastric band around the upper portion of your stomach to create a small pouch. The Lap-Band helps to reduce the amount of food you can eat at any given time by slowing emptying into the lower stomach. This helps you feel full sooner, stay full longer and reduces hunger urges.

The minimally-invasive Lap-Band placement procedure requires no cutting, stapling or intestinal rerouting. Only a few tiny incisions are made in the abdominal area to allow Dr. Hedden to use a larascope (a thin tube which contains a tiny camera) to complete the procedure.

The Lap-Band is adjustable to allow less or more food into the lower stomach. Dr. Hedden adjusts the gastric band by expanding or deflating individual "pillows" located within the perimeter of the band with saline solution. Adjustments do not require additional surgery but are made through a comfortable, discrete access port located beneath the skin. The access port is connected to the Lap-Band by thin tubing.
